Chris Rock and Malaak Compton divorced after a nearly two-decade marriage and went through a court struggle. In addition, the comic acknowledged to having affairs with three women, one of whom was well-known.
Chris Rock recently made headlines for a public brawl with Will Smith at the Oscars ceremony, in response to the comedian’s joke about Jada Smith, which poked fun at her physical condition. Will decided to walk up to the stage and smack and shout at Chris on national television.
Will went on to win Best Actor for his role in “King Richard,” but the controversy he created overshadowed his accomplishment. Chris, like Will, was once married to Malaak Compton-Rock, his 19-year wife. Here’s a look into their relationship as husband and wife, as well as their divorce.
When Rock met Malaak Compton-Rock, a UNICEF public relations officer, he had just finished his time on “Saturday Night Live.” It wasn’t long until the pair married in 1996, just three years after meeting.
However, it took them some time to start a family, and their first child, Lola Simone Rock, was born in 2002. They had another daughter, Zahra Savannah, two years later, and then a child from South Africa, Ntombi, whom they reared jointly.
Despite being married for 19 years, Chris and Malaak had their share of issues, which eventually led to their separation in 2014 and divorce in 2016. One of their problems stemmed from Chris’ adultery, as he admitted to having an affair with three women, one of whom was well-known.
“I was a piece of [expletive],” he admitted, saying that as the family’s earner, he believed he had the right to cheat. “That’s a load of nonsense [expletive]. In fact, it works the other way around. My flaws are amplified. If you’re truly loved, your significant other has a high view of you. And you betrayed them.”
Chris also stated that it wasn’t fair to his wife, who didn’t have the same industry clout as him. According to Us Weekly, he claimed in his Netflix documentary “Chris Rock: Tamborine”:
“Because I’m a [expletive], it’s my fault.” I am deafeningly deafeningly deafening I wasn’t very nice. I was irritable. ‘I pay for everything,’ I reasoned. I’m free to do whatever I want.’ That [expletive] [expletive] [expletive] [expletive] [expletive] [expletive] [expletive] [exple “All I knew was that I was the [expletive].”
“When guys cheat, it’s as though we’re looking for something new, but you know what comes next? Your woman finds out, and she’s no longer with you. She’ll never be the same after that “Added the comedian. “You don’t want to end up in a divorce. Have you found someone you adore? Hold on tight and make a commitment.”
The two were seen together on dates, leading to speculation that they were dating. Sadly, neither of them verified that they were anything more than buddies.
Despite the fact that Malaak rose to prominence as the famous celebrity’s wife, she is a well-known humanitarian in her own right.

Malaak earned a bachelor’s degree in arts administration from Howard University before becoming a public relations officer.
After leaving UNICEF, she created Styleworks, a non-profit salon that assists women get makeovers before entering the workforce and leaving public assistance.
Malaak started the Angelrock Project in 2008 to promote education and volunteerism in underserved regions in South Africa and the United States.
Malaak is also the author of “If It Takes a Village, Build One: How I Found Meaning Through a Life of Service and 100+ Ways You Can Too,” a book on her humanitarian work. The book is based on personal accounts of how her service improved her outlook and brought her closer to others.
The book also includes ideas for how people might give back to the community in ways that will inspire and fulfill everyone. Malaak isn’t afraid to share her missions and personal life on Instagram, a platform she uses to inspire others.
Malaak issued a statement following the couple’s separation in 2014, assuring the public that their children were their primary focus. She also requested seclusion at this period of change in their lives, but as a public figure, inquisitive eyes were everywhere.
Chris’ original divorce file said that they only had two children, therefore the former couple argued over child support during the process. Meanwhile, Malaak claims that Ntombi was adopted as a child when she was just a few months old and is now a family member. David Aronson, her attorney, says:
“Recent tabloid media reports are saddening to [Malaak], as they are full of erroneous speculation and falsehoods that are damaging to three innocent young girls.”
He said, “Malaak’s adoption is not yet finalized, but it is in the works, following the strict procedures and safeguards of international adoption legislation. The youngster is in the country legally with her birth parents’ formal approval and has been cherished and appreciated by the entire Rock family during her time here.”
Chris claims that his ex-wife can meet her and their children’s financial demands. Malaak, on the other hand, claims that during their years as husband and wife, Chris had totally supported his family financially. Simultaneously, she stayed at home to raise her children and continued her philanthropic work.
Aside from the legal filings, Christ confessed that criticizing Malaak was unjust because “I have a mic, and she doesn’t.” “, he explained “God forbid if she is being followed in the grocery. That’s not acceptable. I’ll have to keep an eye out for her at weddings and graduations.”
Chris announced in 2017 that he was happily dating and moving on with his life, despite the fact that he was still yearning for peace after their legal struggle. He stated, “
“I’d like to find some serenity, because people usually find it in the midst of a terrible situation.” Why does it have to be that way? Maybe I’ll be able to find God without being in such a mess. Maybe I’ll be able to attain a higher spiritual dimension without having a near-death experience.”
The couple divorced after 18 years of marriage, but they were officially married for 19 years. Chris, understandably, learned a lot during their marriage and has since integrated marital issues into his standup comedy routines. He once talked about the things that individuals look for in a relationship that aren’t there.
“People want too much in relationships, which is a problem. Everyone is on the lookout for their soul mate “he stated “You will never find your soulmate. It’s impossible to find the ideal partner. It’s impossible to find someone who enjoys both Seinfeld and the Wu-Tang Clan.”
Chris has kept his personal life discreet since then, but he was said to have dated actress Carmen Ejogo in 2020. The two were seen together on dates, leading to speculation that they were dating. Sadly, neither of them verified that they were anything more than buddies.
Chris dated actress Megalyn Echikunwoke for four years before the rumor, but the relationship ended peacefully. While they were together, the comedian cheerfully chatted about their relationship, noting that Echikunwoke “acquired her own dough.”
In the meantime, Malaak started seeing a man she characterized as “kind, kind, loving, romantic, adventurous, fun-loving, curious, giving, and spiritual.
Malaak eagerly promotes her new spouse on social media, showing photos of their life together as well as their adventures across the world, including a trip to Croatia. She expressed herself as follows:
“The seas and oceans!” Beautiful coves, secluded beaches, and crystal clear water. Oh, and don’t get me started on the fresh oysters straight from the sea!”
Malaak is still a proud mother to her three girls, whom she brags about on social media, despite having the time of her life with her new boyfriend.
The three lovely ladies looked amazing in dresses as they grinned beside each other in what appeared to be their home in one of her photographs.
Although Chris and Malaak’s relationship did not work out, it did lead them to better places. Both parents consider themselves fortunate to have raised their children together.
