How would you feel if you were given your whole income in one lump sum? Both of their lives were pleasantly touched by a woman who opted to refill at the gas station where he works.

Nkosikho Mbele, a Shell gas attendant in South Africa, experienced exactly this. And an act of compassion he performed for a young woman was the catalyst for his newfound good fortune.

It all started when Monet van Deventer of Cape Town, South Africa, went to fill at the petrol station. She immediately discovered, however, that she didn’t have any cash or credit cards with her when she arrived.

Nkosikho came up to her car and began cleaning the windows, but Monet intervened, knowing she couldn’t afford it.

“Thank you for cleaning my windows,” I told him, “but I won’t be able to put petrol in today.” Because he was gazing at my gasoline needle, which was already in the red, he appeared agitated and surprised,” she explained.

The gas worker couldn’t stand it any longer and offered Monet a kind offer: he offered to pay her R100 (USD 7) gas bill so she could refill and travel across the highway with adequate gas.

“Ma’am, you can’t run out of petrol on the N2,” he remarked. “He said, ‘I’ll pay R100 and you can give me back my R100 whenever you’re near again,’” Monet remembered.

Monet, who works as an account manager for a hotel software business, assumed it was a service offered to all Shell customers. Nkosikho, on the other hand, was seen grabbing his own bank card to pay for the petrol at the register.

He began refueling her nearly empty gas tank before she could say anything. It wasn’t until she was driving away that she realized what had transpired.

Nkosikho, however, works for minimum pay, and the R100 was almost as much as he earns in a day.

Nkosikho, who makes roughly R1,100 (USD 75) each week, didn’t have much money to spare. Even though he wasn’t sure if Monet would refund his money, he agreed to pay for her petrol.

Nkosikho, it turned out, had nothing to be concerned about.

Monet returned with his money and a box of chocolates a few days later.

“I was overjoyed that she returned. I could tell she appreciated my assistance by the look on her face; you can tell when someone appreciates what you’ve done for them. “I could see it in her eyes that she was grateful for what I had done for her,” Nkosikho said.

But Monet had something special in mind for the friendly gas station employee who assisted her when she needed money to refuel her car.

Their tale instantly went viral after she shared it on Facebook. Soon after, a steady trickle of donations for Nkosikho began to flood in.

Monet and Nkosikho talked about it and agreed to start a crowdfunding campaign.

The event was a huge success, raising over $94,000, which is almost eight years’ worth of Nkosikho’s salary.

Shell’s executives learned of their employee’s good deed and decided to nominate him for the Regional Service Excellence Award.

Shell has also committed to provide $35,000 to a local charity of Nkosikho’s choosing.

“All of this was God’s doing.” It’s as though I’m dreaming. I’m taken aback. I’m optimistic about our chances. We can make a difference in the world as regular individuals. See, I was no one, yet because of this insignificant detail, people who don’t even know me can see me…” Nkosikho expressed his gratitude for his fortunate fortune.

The gas attendant lives in a small hut with his two children, mother, and brother, so this money was a huge benefit to him and his family.

“I was just delighted to see her drive away, knowing she’d reach securely where she needed to go, and I had no clue that what I did would enrich my life so much,” he added.

Nkosikho became an immediate celebrity in his community for his generous deed, in addition to his newfound fortune. People would regularly stop him and ask for selfies while he walked around the township after work.

He remarked, “My life has been flipped upside down.”
